Carnival to me signifies free expression, passion and good energy. Since birth I have been participating in some way, shape or form with my family heavily involved in the activities around Notting Hill Carnival. My Grandmother who comes from Trinidad and Tobago, was the first person to set up a food stall for the Panorama, her and her four daughters catered authentic Trinidadian food for hundreds and generated a good name and reputation in the community. My mother who is a famous Calypsonian in the UK and even myself who was a reigning Junior Calypso monarch in the UK. Every year, with carnival on my doorstep I would listen to the Soca music as it pumps throughout the streets of my community, watch all the beautiful costumes and waited until I had the chance to join in. Now as an adult, I make sure I experience it every year, proudly celebrating where I come from, freely expressing the beauty that is Soca music and having a good time. Soca represents freedom and expression and I will always pass the culture down from generation to generation.

The Significance of Carnival Celebrations from My Perspective
Growing up in the Caribbean, carnival was an event that not only my family, but the entire community looked forward to every year. The anticipation and excitement surrounding the festivities were contagious and brought us all together in celebration. It wasn't until I studied in Trinidad that I truly understood the essence of this event. The music, costumes and energy of the crowd were indescribable and taught me the importance of unity and joy in our traditions. Although carnival in London has a different vibe, the enthusiasm of the people is still infectious. Recently, I discovered Carnival Rebellion, a movement that strives to preserve the true meaning of carnival. This inspiring effort has helped me reconnect with the genuine spirit of the celebration, reminding me of the traditions I cherished back home and during my time in Trinidad. For me, carnival is a time to come together with loved ones, friends and strangers alike, to celebrate life and our shared heritage. It is a time to forget our worries and immerse ourselves in the joy of the moment. Whether it's the vibrant costumes, the pulsating rhythms of soca music or the intoxicating aroma of Caribbean cuisine, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

The Significance of Carnival in My Life and How it Shapes My Identity
Carnival is a time of pure spiritual and euphoric joy for me. Living in England, where safe spaces to celebrate our culture and people are scarce, I eagerly anticipate this time of year. My first experience with NHC at 18 was like a slice of home, where soca music played, flags waved, and whistles blew. Since then, I haven't missed a single carnival because it's the one time of year when I can be my authentic self. It's a limited time, but just being able to celebrate it brings me immense happiness, and I share this feeling with everyone I can reach. At carnival, I can laugh, drink, and enjoy my life to the fullest with my people, and that's why I always wear the biggest smile on the road. As the world becomes more globalized, it's crucial that we preserve and honour the traditions that make us unique. Carnival Rebellion's efforts to promote the true spirit of carnival are a testament to the power of community and the importance of maintaining cultural heritage. I am grateful for the memories and lessons that carnival has given me and look forward to continuing to celebrate this beautiful tradition for years to come.
